THE Parliamentary Public Investments Committee (PIC) has suggested the termination of Sugar Board of Tanzania (SBT) for failing to resolve and manage its responsibilities effectively.
Also, the PIC needed clarification on why the board still imports sugar when the country has many sugar industries and enough stock of sugar which is enough for Tanzanians.
“We need clarification on why you (board members) failed to resolve many problems indicated on the report and why the sugar industry in the country has faced many challenges that needed to be resolved by the board, but the challenges are still there.
We need to know the responsibility of the board,” PIC member Mr Maftah Nachuma said.
A member of the committee, Mr Frank Mwakajoka wanted clarification on the high price of sugar that is not affordable to many Tanzanians. “The report submitted by the SBT to our committee shows many problems facing the board.
We want to know who is responsible in resolving the problems and why the price of sugar is high when in February the board announced that the retail price of sugar will be 1,800/- per kilogram,” he said.
The PIC were also surprised by the report which indicated that the country has enough sugar to fulfil the needs of all Tanzanians and at reasonable price, saying that the poor performance of the board is causing the importation and smuggling of sugar in the country.
The PIC called upon SBT to ensure they find ways of helping out growers in the country in order to boost them on their agricultural activities.
PIC Chairperson Ms Lolesia Bukwimba gave the board members more time in order to come up with reasonable answers for the benefit of the nation. “We do not agree with your answers.
We want to know why SBT is there but we are still faced with many challenges in the sugar industry,” Ms Bukwimba told SBT. He said that in order to prevent random importation of sugar in the country, efforts are needed from both sides.
