OVER 50 Directors of Administration and Human Resources and Directors of Policy and Planning from all government ministries have received training that will enable them to identify the current leadership development needs for leaders.
According to a statement released, the capacity building exercise was organised by the Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (UONGOZI Institute), the President’s Office and the Public Service Management to help them determine how the leadership challenges in their respective ministries and agencies can be addressed through training.
The UONGOZI Institute Chief Executive Officer, Prof Joseph Semboja, said that after taking some time to appropriately develop and pilot the leadership training modules, UONGOZI Institute is now officially in a position to provide the government with a selection of training courses to be offered throughout the year.
“This workshop will allow us to set priorities and focus our efforts in line with the current and future leadership capacity needs of respective ministries, departments and agencies,” said Prof Semboja.
Further discussion at the workshop also focused on the requirements of being a good leader, programmes needed to make better leaders in government and determining the best methodology of carrying out training to leaders in government.
UONGOZI Institute offers hands-on, short-term training courses for 2-3 days that are specifically tailored to the needs of both strategic and operational leaders in government in delivering their day-to-day duties to the public.
The Institute has a total of 24 courses that are grouped into three core leadership competencies: Making strategic choices, leading people and other resources and excelling in personal qualities.
Some of the courses offered include; efficient public service delivery, managing crisis and risk, leadership for sustainable development, advanced strategic communication skills and advanced negotiation skills for high stakes investment deals.
UONGOZI Institute operates under the auspices of the President’s Office and as part of its mandate to build the capacity of leaders from the public sector, private sector and civil society; the Institute offers training, research, networking and dialogue services to senior public servants.
The workshop was organised in order to identify the leadership capacity requirements in the public service to inform the delivery of the Institute’s training programmes.
