THE fight to control contamination of food in secondary schools by Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) is on board in a move to protect students from poisonous chemicals concealed to make sure no student is debilitated.
Speaking during a one day seminar for secondary school headmasters, college’s principals and managers here yesterday, the guest of honour, Mr Aggrey Muhabuki, said that TFDA is conducting a census to identify schools that are providing food so that it is easy to track and control them.
“The concept of food security is vital for protecting secondary schools and colleges in order to continue having the prospective officers and leaders who are healthy,” Mr Muhabuki said.
He said that the initiative will control the extent of poison contamination in food and the second will develop a comprehensive and lasting solution to reduce food poisoning in secondary schools and colleges to improve the health and livelihoods of millions of students.
The second initiative seeks to develop a safe and natural bio-control technology that can effectively reduce poison contamination of maize and groundnut in the field and during storage.
He said that TFDA’s role is to control the rampant problem of food where the urgent need to control food poisonous contamination is emphasized by its management, and it is also a concern by the government.
The one day seminar which drew over 70 participants from Mwanza city and Ilemela municipality was organized by TFDA and brought together health officers and partners to plan for their implementation.
Mr Mhabuki said inadequate pre and post-harvest management practices among smallholder farmers and poor storage led to high and unacceptable levels of poison in maize and contributes greatly to the high statistics of students to be unsafe.
The seminar was designed to put forward an opportunity to discuss issues pertaining to food security in schools and colleges for the betterment of students so as to mitigate the effects that could happen.
In seminar deliberations, participants came up with a resolution that the education in mitigation should start from the producers who are farmers, and that the report should be sent in hard copy and a simple language that is used for easy understanding.
It was also said that regulations should be uniform countrywide and be friendly for consumers in line with the indigenous citizens. Government should get many experts who will reach many citizens and massive education should be provided to customers so that the information reaches them on time.
TFDA has been established under food security, Drugs and Cosmetic no 1 Act of 2003 with the objective of protecting the health of food consumers, drugs and cosmetic and medical equipments.
